About What Works Education
We focus on bridging the gap between what is delivered in the classroom and what is received by the child.

KS3 English Tutoring
At Key Stage 3, pupils should read widely and deeply for both pleasure and information, engaging with whole books and challenging texts. They should refine their writing skills, developing resilience to write at length, including formal essays and imaginative pieces for various audiences and purposes. A strong grasp of vocabulary, grammar, and linguistic conventions is essential, alongside the ability to analyse and use figurative language effectively. Our tutor supports these aims by building on prior knowledge and understanding what works for your child, offering personalised and bespoke support, including tailored guidance for children with SEND, to ensure every learner progresses with confidence and a love of language.
KS4 English Tutoring
At KS4 the aims are to develop pupils’ confidence and competence in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Pupils should read fluently with understanding, developing a habit of reading widely for both pleasure and information. They should acquire a broad vocabulary, strong grammatical knowledge, and an appreciation of literary heritage. Writing should be clear, accurate, and adaptable to different contexts, purposes, and audiences. Discussion is key to learning, helping pupils articulate ideas and engage in debate. Our English tutoring supports these goals, offering personalised guidance to build skills, enhance literacy, and foster a lifelong love of language and literature. This includes tailoring support for children with SEND to prepare them for adulthood and the world beyond.

Educational Testing
Our new educational testing service at What Works Education is designed to identify what works for your child’s learning needs. Our qualified tutors administer assessments that evaluate key areas such as reading and writing speed, providing valuable insights into your child’s performance. The assessment takes up to 60 minutes, after which an experienced professional will interpret the results and provide a detailed written report. This report can be shared with school to ensure your child receives the right support, including recommendations for effective strategies at home and in the classroom.

Our testing also identifies potential traits of dyslexia. While not a formal diagnosis, it helps determine whether further assessment or additional support at school may be beneficial. At What Works Education, our tutors are fully qualified to administer tests, write professional reports, and make recommendations for access arrangements in KS4 examinations—ensuring that every child receives the tailored support they need to succeed.
